The Role of Caustic Soda Flakes in the Metallurgical Industry

Created on 07.11
Caustic soda flakes, also known as solid sodium hydroxide (NaOH), play an indispensable role in the metallurgical industry. As a crucial chemical raw material, it occupies a key position in the processes of metal smelting, refining, and processing.
The application of caustic soda flakes in the metallurgical sector stems from their ability to convert the effective components in ores into soluble sodium salts, aiming to remove insoluble impurities from the ores. Caustic soda flakes act as a solubilizing agent, referred to as a flux, although sometimes caustic soda (liquid form) is also used. For instance, in the extraction of tungsten, the concentrate needs to be roasted with soda ash to form soluble sodium tungstate first. Then, through processes such as acid precipitation, dehydration, and recovery with caustic soda flakes, powdered tungsten is finally obtained.

1. Smelting Flux
During metallurgy, metal ores require high-temperature smelting to be converted into metals. In this process, caustic soda flakes are used as a flux, which can lower the melting point of the ore, making the smelting process more efficient.
2. Metal Refining
Caustic soda flakes also play a significant role in the metal refining process. As a strong alkaline medium, it can remove oxides, sulfides, and other impurities on the metal surface, thereby improving the purity and quality of the metal. For example, in the refining of copper, caustic soda flakes are used as a reducing agent to reduce oxides in copper to metallic copper, thus enhancing the purity of copper.
3. Electrolytic Aluminum Production
Electrolytic aluminum is one of the important production methods in the modern aluminum industry. In this process, caustic soda flakes are used as an electrolyte, helping the current pass through the aluminum liquid and decompose into aluminum and oxygen.

4. Desulfurizing Agent
In the processes of steelmaking and antimony smelting, sulfur is a harmful element that needs to be strictly controlled. The presence of sulfur can reduce the performance of steel and affect product quality. Therefore, desulfurizing agents are required during smelting to reduce the sulfur content. Caustic soda flakes, as an effective desulfurizing agent, can react with sulfur to form sulfides that are easy to remove.
5. Cleaning Metal Surfaces
In the metallurgical industry, metal surfaces are often covered with oxides, oil stains, and other impurities. These impurities can affect the performance and service life of metals. Therefore, metal surfaces need to be cleaned before processing. Caustic soda flakes have good cleaning ability and can react with dirt on metal surfaces to form easily soluble salts, which can then be rinsed off with water. This method is applicable to cleaning the surfaces of metals such as stainless steel, iron, and copper.
